GE Opal……Problems!!!

We have had our opal for about 11 months now. It stopped working at about 10 months. I was reluctant to buy one because the reviews were mixed. However, they offered a 1 year warranty and an additional 3 year extended warranty through 3rd party. Having this security blanket I decided to purchase. When unit stopped producing ice at 10 months, they were quick to answer the phone and reassure me that they would take care of me. They emailed me troubleshooting protocol that needed to be performed to diagnose machine. I performed all requested troubleshooting and sent in all results. Once they realized that the machine is broken past the point of cleaning, then they stopped responding and decided to just ignore me. I have been reaching out via email for a full month and cannot get any resolve. Rest assured, if your unit is faulty, they will not stand behind it or honor their warranty. Side note: we only ran distilled water through the unit and cleaned weekly. I took every precaution to protect this investment and it still failed. Do not buy one. They are not made to last.

Pros are the ice producers is almost exactly like sonic ice as expected. It also produces ice at a reasonable rate although the storage capacity is limited. Corns the maintenance and future maintenance is time-consuming. The directions and getting it to operate online and in the boxing are terrible. There are words that light up on the front of the machine that you would have no idea are there have they not flashed on and off during the installation process. The Wi-Fi directions are useless online although it direct you to utilising them to connect every other GE product with only one exception the icemaker.

Worked for 2 days

Loved this ice maker for two days, then it started making a loud squeaking noise. Went to the owners manual troubleshooting .... it says "may start to squeak as ice starts to build up around the mechanisms. The defost cycle is automatic, and may take 30-45 minutes.During this time, the front button won't respond. More frequent squeaking usually requires white vinegar cleaning to remove internal mineral scale buildup". Turned off machine overnight ran cleaning cycle with white vinegar (note - machine did not make "squeaking" sound during cleaning cycle.) with cleaning cycle completed drained the white vinegar solution and ran another cleaning cycle with clean water. Once the ice maker started making ice the Squeaking started up again.

Great ice, poor design with inherent known issues

Brand new machine made ice, accompanied by a screeching sound every 20 minutes. Not ideal customer service and a bad design. I had to finally unplug machine as it was waking the whole house up 3 times a night in defrost mode, after a week of use the noise was just too much to handle and not worth the ice. Even when machine does work, they seldom go for more than 4-6 months without issues ice machine tech tells me. Had the opal 1, after 3 replacements, I gave up. I was hoping they'd fix the issues on the 2.0, everyone I know with one has had issues as well. Last opal had a 1 year warranty, almost half that year was spent without an ice machine waiting for a replacement, feels like it's looking like it's going to happen again

Horrible since GE bought 1st Build

I purchased our ice machine approx 1 month ago, and within weeks of operation, it's already defective. Makes an extremely loud whining noise from inside the machine. GE customer service thus far, after we registered the product has been abysmal. This is our second nugget ice machine, the first was from 1st build before GE bought the company. Flaw with ice bin - WiFi a stupid idea.

Ice maker is working fine. I have not had any issues with its ice production since 3/27/2022. Now, the issue I am having is with the removable ice bin. Water gets between the two layers of plastic at the front of the ice bin and you cant get it out. You can see the soapy water in the images I have included in this review. I will be contacting GE and telling them they need to send me a replacement ice bin. An ice maker having WiFi is a stupid idea. There is zero benefit to having this. The WiFi also forgets all your network information if you turn it off and then on again. Have to do the setup again. I will never enable WiFi again on this. It it pointless. Instead of including WiFi, engineering time and effort should have been put into a cleaning reminder on the front panel display.

I waited until the ice maker went on sale to purchase. Even so I think it's overpriced. However, I still like it. I ran the clean function several times as instructed and connected to it using the app. The app says I need to descale but really, I just got it and use filtered water. Once I made enough ice to fill my fridge ice bin, I set a schedule to make ice three days a week, two hours each day. My living area is fairly close to the kitchen and I notice the noise. It's not loud but noticeable. The ice quality is softer than Sonic ice which I use to purchase regularly before I bought this ice maker.

Made ice in minutes. I have bought engines that weren't packaged as good as this ice maker was, literally. You can tell this isn't a throw away when you pick up the box. Solid machine all the way! Be sure and use distilled or purified water to avoid scale buildup and bad taste. DO NOT use sink water.

Love this ice maker

I love this ice maker, it makes ice really fast. If I could change anything it would be that it comes with a bigger water tank because I have to fill the tank everyday, but it's worth it to have this nugget ice anytime I want it it was a little expensive but worth it if your like me and a iceaholic! I couldn't live with out it if something happens to this one down the road I will diffently buy another that's how much I love it!

Great concept, poor functional design

We are on our second GE Opal Ice Maker. We had to return the first one as it made a loud screeching noise after a week of operation. You need to get a filter. The instructions suggest it is optional but after getting a second ice maker, it is clear that the filter provides a steady flow of ice. The system appears to malfunction (needs to add water and defrosts quite frequently) after one week of use to force you to clean it (required weekly). The water bin seems to have regular air bubbles constantly requiring you to move the bin to eliminate the air pocket. For $600, I would have expected more from GE. If you want to spend this kind of money on a GE product, stick to a old fashion dryer. It's more reliable and low maintenance! So disappointed.

My favorite type of ice!

This makes the little nuggets of ice, which is what I love. The capacity is pretty big, too, and the ice maker will continue to make ice to fill it up whenever you take any. It was easy to set up; we just had to find a nice roomy counter spot for it. It's not HUGE, but it does take up some space. We use up a lot of ice from our refrigerator and often run out during the summer months, so this is a perfect machine to supplement our ice supply. The reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because it can be LOUD during the times it's making ice. We haven't taken the time yet to figure out why or if there is anything we can do to quiet it. But there were a couple times we had to just turn it off because it was WAILING, and the kids were asleep. There is a bluetooth feature which I didn't think I would use much. But when it was loud, it was nice that I was in the other room and was able to turn it off with my phone instead of going to it to shut it off! Overall though, I love this ice maker. Just need to figure out how to make it quieter....

Best ice maker for ice snobs

Love that the ice maker is quiet. It automatically makes more ice to replenish what has been used. The only negative is I wish it could be directly connected to a water source. I am constantly filling up the water reservoir. I guess we just use too much ice! Its style is sleek and fits with any decoration. I love this sonic, crunchy ice!
